Events, Programs & School Activities
Altar Servers
Girls and boys in Grades 5 through 8 may sign up for this program where they are taught by the pastor and other priests the various procedures of the mass. These students then assist at regularly scheduled Masses offered at St. Andrew. In May of each year, girls and boys in Grade 5 are instructed on proper serving techniques.

Art
As part of the school’s curriculum, all students are allowed the opportunity to take art where they learn to express a variety of mediums. Painting, sculpturing, paper mache, and drawing are among the various activities students explore. Students’ artwork is displayed throughout the school and a number of pieces are selected for display at various art shows.
Athletics
St. Andrew Parish has a strong sports program that begins with students in Grade 4. Students play in diocesan leagues unless they participate in a sport such as golf or tennis. In those cases, students compete with other public and private schools in the area. The St. Andrew Parish Athletic Association is responsible for all sport programs offered at St. Andrew School. The programs are offered to students and to any members of St. Andrew Parish in the appropriate grade levels.

| "Viking Magic” is a performing basketball drill team from St. Andrew Parish that performs ball-handling and dribbling exhibitions during the half-time show at high school, college, and professional basketball games. Tryouts are necessary for this group. | ||||||

Artist Visits
St. Andrew School’s Media Center and Enrichment Staff invites nationally know artists and authors of children’s books to visit the school on a regular basis. Classes are able to meet with the artist or author and students are invited to ask questions and learn more about the artist or author’s works.
Band
Band lessons are available through the Watterson Area Band Program. Group band lessons are given several days a week during school hours at St. Andrew School. Students in Grades 5 through 8 have the opportunity to participate in this program. Band rehearsals are held during the school day. There are fees for band, and private and semi-private lessons are available. Band students have the opportunity to participate in the following programs during the school year: Christmas program, winter and spring concerts, solo and ensemble contests, and the Honors Band.
Cub Scouts
St. Andrew Parish sponsors pack 296. Boys in grade 1 (Tiger Cubs), Grade 2 (Wolfs), Grade 3 (Bears), and Grades 4 and 5 (Webelos) attend monthly Pack meetings and participate in a variety of den activities organized to provide them adventure, a chance to learn a new skill, and experience outdoor activities.
Boy Scouts
Boys are invited to participate in various grade level Boy Scout troops at the school. Boys in Grades 6 through 8 are eligible to participate in Scouting with Troop 296. The troop meets on Tuesday nights at the Reed Rd. property. Outdoor activities and community projects are emphasized, and boys advance through the ranks as they earn various merit badges and other awards.
Brownies
Girls in Grades 1 through 3 are eligible to participate in Brownies. As an introductory level of Girls Scouts, Brownies have regular troop meetings where they have an opportunity to participate in various activities.
Community Outreach Program
Sponsored by St. Andrew Home and School Association, these programs are designed to teach students about community service and give them a sense of caring and sharing for others. Grade appropriate, the Ronald McDonald House, Salesian Center, and Children’s Hospital have benefited from these school projects.
Computer Lab
St. Andrew currently has two computer labs in the building as well as several computers in each classroom. All students at St. Andrew School attend classes in the Computer lab where they are taught the fundamentals of computers. Additionally, students have the opportunity to work on computers at other times for special projects.

C.O.S.I. on Wheels
Columbus’s Center of Science and Industry (C.O.S.I.) sponsors a program that visits local schools on a regular basis. Assisted by parent volunteers, students have an opportunity to receive hands-on experience with various scientific exhibits.
Dances
St. Andrew 7th and 8th graders are often invited to dances sponsored by other Bishop Watterson Feeder Schools. Students will be notified via the announcements and through classroom teachers or flyers.
Guidelines for attending the Bishop Watterson Feeder School Dances include:
- Only students that currently attend the schools invited will be admitted.
- Students must arrive no later than 8:00 p.m. or they will not be admitted.
- Students may not leave the dance prior to 9:30 p.m. unless a parent comes into the school to pick them up.
- Students will not be permitted on the stage at any time.
- Students will not be permitted to ride on one another's shoulders or be lifted above anyone's head.
- Students will not be permitted to stand on bleachers.
- Cell phones may not be out or visible at any time during the dance. Use of a cell phone without the permission of a chaperone will result in confiscation of that phone.
- Any inappropriate touching will result in removal from the dance.
Dress Code guidelines include:
- No tank tops, strapless, or spaghetti strapped tops- all shirts must have sleeves.
- No short shorts or short skirts. Shorts and skirts must be mid-thigh length or longer.
- No midriffs showing at any time.
- No see-through or low-cut tops may be worn.
- Clothing may not have inappropriate words or pictures.
- Shoes must be worn at all times.
Parents will be notified and asked to come and pick up their child for any acts of inappropriate behavior or failure to comply with the dress code.
D.A.R.E.
(Drug Abuse Resistance Education) Program – Offered by the Upper Arlington Police Department, this intensive drug awareness program is presented to all students in Grade 5.
Enrichment Program
St. Andrew School employs two part-time Enrichment teachers to work with students in each grade presenting them with academic challenges in a variety of areas such as languages, creative writing, newspaper publishing, and environmental projects.

Eye for Art
One of the exciting programs at St. Andrew School, parent volunteers lead classroom discussions in the appreciation of famous works of art.

Field Trips
Students in all grades participate in class field trips (parental written permission required) to such places as C.O.S.I., the Columbus Zoo, Olentangy Indian Caverns, Ohio Historical Society, and Columbus community plays. Field trips are grade-appropriate.
Geography Bee
Students in Grades 4 through 8 are eligible to participate in the Geography Bee sponsored by the National Geographic Society. Classroom winners advance to school-wide competition, and subsequent winners are eligible for regional competition.

Girl Scouts
Girl Scouts are sponsored by St. Andrew Parish. Girls in Kindergarten (Daisy), Grades 1 through 3 (Brownies), Grades 4 through 6 (Juniors) and Grades 7 and 8 (Cadets) are involved with field trips, community projects, and group activities.
Latchkey Program
The Latchkey Program provides supervised after-school childcare for students in Grades K through 5. Further information concerning this program is provided in APPENDIX III. A Latchkey Program manual is also available at the school office.

Mary Orten Adventure Camp
Students in Grades 6 and 7 attend this program, which is designed to build individual self-confidence, cooperation, and camaraderie with class members through undertaking certain problem solving situations.
Math Counts
An optional program, which exposes students in Grades 7 and 8 to more advanced math problems. On a once-per-week basis, students meet before or after school to learn various math solving techniques and math games.

Music Programs
All students participate in a comprehensive musical program learning the basics of music and are exposed to a number of musical instruments. They explore popular, classic, and spiritual music as well as perform musical programs for the school.

Liturgies of the Word
Depending upon the month or the specific religious event, students, teachers and religious leaders at St. Andrew celebrate a variety of spiritual occasion with a special liturgical service. Organized by the parish’s Director of Religious Education, each child has an opportunity to fully participate in these small Liturgies, which give more meaning to the student’s faith.
Plays
With the assistance of the music teacher, all students in various grades present plays for the rest of the school, family, and friends. Theme plays are scheduled throughout the year.
Safety Patrol
Students in grades 5 and 6 are eligible to become members of the school Safety Patrol. With signed parental consent, 5th graders are trained by 6th graders each October and serve for one year beginning October 1st and ending October 31st of the following school year. Safety Patrol members are assigned to one of four teams with at least 5 members on each team. The teams serve together for approximately one week each month. All members of the St. Andrew Safety Patrol must serve duty both before and after school during their assigned week. Social Events
Classroom parties are held for the students on Halloween and on St. Valentine’s Day. These events are sponsored by the St. Andrew Home and School Association and the Room Mothers. Any additional parties must be approved by the individual classroom teacher.
Skating party
Join us twice each year for a skating party at WOW Family Skating Center for St.Andrew Students only. Look for details in the Thursday Folder.
Spelling Bees
Offered to students in Grades 5 though 8, six students from each grade (chosen on the basis of a written examination) advance to an “Oral Bee”. The top two students from the school advance to a higher level of competition with students participating from other schools.
Daisy Scouts
Kindergarten girls are eligible to join the Daisy Scouts program. As an introduction to Scouting, girls participate in organized games and other activities.
